How do we start batik fractal research and design?

April 2005

Muhamad Lukman, former student of Master Program of Department of Architecture ITB, is working on his Thesis about Fractal as form generator  in Architecture. Lukman consulted with Yun Hariadi as colleague, at that moment Yun Hariadi still an active researcher at Bandung Fe Institute.

January 2006

Muhamad Lukman, Nancy Margried, and Yun Hariadi met for the 1st time at Ohlala Cafe Dago and discussed about art exhibition project, combining math and architecture as the colaborative project  between Lukman and Yun. Nancy will take part as organizer, fund raiser and manager.

March 2006

Nancy then mentions the word “batik” to describe one of Lukman’s designs and encourage Lukman to draw more objects similar to batik pattern. Nancy suggest that Lukman and Yun working together in researching batik and math rather than architecture and math. This consideration based on the hypothesis that batik is probably having fractal characteristics. Moreover, Nancy sees that by researching and exhibiting batik, the scope of audience can be enlarged. Beside, everybody knows what batik is. Term “Batik Fractal” first appears. Various proposals and paper works made by Pixel People Project used the term.

April 2006

Yun and Lukman start researching about batik and fractal. Lukman concentrates on designing new batik patterns using fractal methods. Yun concentrates on analysing the batik patterns with fractal theory. This is the early stage where these 3 people only plan to do small exhibition in Bandung to showcase and presents their research and design.

May-December2006

Lukman and Yun concentrates on Lukman’s thesis research while Yun perfecting the research about batik and fractal. Lukman explore L-System to create objects generatively. Later, these objects developed to be batik pattern.

January-March 2007

Muhamad Lukman, Nancy Margried and Yun Hariadi agreed to form a group named Pixel People Project, a Research and Design Group, specialized in research and producing generative art and  design. This group has 3 departments: Research, Design and Business.

Yun Hariadi at that time is a researcher from Bandung Fe Institute and  appointed as  Head of Research of Pixel People Project.  Muhamad Lukman is appointed as Head of Design of Pixel People Project.

Pixel People Project also contacts Drs. Achmad Haldani D. M.Si from Design and Art Faculty, Bandung Institute of Technology. He acts as a consultant for traditional batik ornaments.

Yun Hariadi is in charge of analysing batik pattern with Fractal Theory. This research using Fractal Dimension is used to measure batik dimension. The measurement of Fractal Dimension is through 2 steps : Fourier Transformation and Box-Counting Method. The measurement is including batik color in grey scale (0 scale to 225) instead of black and white (scale 0 to 1)

Muhamad Lukman as Head of Design create and developed batik patterns using fractal method including L-System language 3 dimensional, Cellular Automata, IFS andother variants using mathematical and design software. There are three batik pattern designs are finalized. Lukman is co-author of research paper.

Achmad Haldani give suggestion and justification from culture, traditional ornament, art and design point of view. He also take part as co-author of research paper.

Pixel People Project develops alpha version of generative software based on PHP, entitled Mathebatica and Batica. This generative softwares create batik pattern with L-System 3 dimensional and Cellular Automata.

Nancy starts to work as Head of Business, start publishing and fundraising for this group to get fund support in order to do the research and making batik samples. She is also in charge to organize small exhibition and seminar about Batik Fractal in Bandung.

April 2007

Yun,  Lukman and Nancy decides to submit the research, software and batik samples to join 10thGenerative Art International Conference, Politecnico di Milano, Milan Italy,December 2007.        The abstract submitted with title: “BATIK FRACTAL, FROM TRADITIONAL ART TO MODERN COMPLEXITY” with 3 authors: Muhamad Lukman, Yun Hariadi and Achmad Haldani.

This abstract shows the relationship of batik and fractal, algorithm to create new batik pattern using fractal as form generator and Fractal Dimension as new measurement tools for batik. This abstract accompanied with three samples of Batik Fractal designs. The abstract has been selected and will be presented in Conference event at December 2007. The complete paper also publishes in the Conference Proceeding.

May 2007

Pixel People Project cooperates with Rumah Batik Komar to produce Batik Fractal patterns using traditional resist dye technique.

November 2007

Mr. Kusmayanto Kadiman (Ministry of Research & Technology) asked Pixel People Project to create custom-made Batik Fractal pattern, produced in Rumah Batik Komar for his personal collections. Mr. Kadiman wears the Batik Fractal clothes at Bosscha Event and openly tells public and media that he is wearing Batik Fractal. This is the first time the term of Batik Fractal published in public and mass media.

December 2007

Muhamad Lukman representing Pixel People Project set off to Milan and presents Batik Fractal research, designs and software before the Board Committee of 10th Generative Art International Conference in Politecnico di Milano.

Lukman shows the batik samples and demonstrates Mathebatica and Batica Software.

May 2008

Exhibition and Seminar of Batik Fractal, From Traditional Art to Modern Complexity in Prefere 72, Dago,Bandung (16-18 May 2008). This exhibition is supported by State Ministry of Research and Technology, and opened by Deputy of Minister of Research andTechnology

This seminar presented 6 speakers:

Professor Celestino Soddu and Professor Enrica Colabella from Politecnico di Milano presented paper aboutGenerative Art.

Muhamad Lukman and Yun Hariadi from Pixel People Project presented Batik Fractal and the Fractal Geometry in batik and demo the latest version of batik fractal software at that time (jBatik)  Achmad Haldani from FSRD ITB presented Batik Fractal in relation to Indonesia traditional batik

Komarudin Kudiya owner of Rumah Batik Komar presented potentiality of Batik Fractal in batik industry

June 2008

Pixel People Project registers their Batik Fractal innovation’ patent in Dirjen Haki Indonesia (General Directorate of Intellectual of Property Rights).
