Observing Study of Science in Cultural Heritage on Batik Fractal

Discussion about Batik commonly dominated by cultural perspective. In fact, batik also has potential to be discuss as scientific object. Piksel Indonesia, through jBatik’s software, has done something rare (or perhaps has never been done), which is dissecting batik using mathematical formulas and scientific methods. Scientific research conducted by jBatik shows that patterns in various batik fabrics in Indonesia have divine complexity.

Digitalizing batik pattern through jBatik has opens up new opportunities to identify fractal characters and classifies batik pattern based on it’s complexity and its place of origin. This program also allows jBatik to create a self-affine form when creating new pattern using this technology. Between these two fields – culture and science – Fractal Batik stand in the middle to connect and create new things.

Batik melulu dibahas dalam perspektif warisan budaya. Padahal, batik juga punya potensi saintifik untuk dibahas lebih lanjut. Piksel Indonesia, lewat software jBatik melakukan hal yang jarang (atau barangkali belum pernah) dilakukan, yaitu membedah batik menggunakan rumus matematika dan metode ilmiah. Riset saintifik yang dilakukan jBatik ini, menunjukkan bahwa pola dalam ratusan kain batik di Indonesia punya kompleksitas seni yang unik.

Usaha digitialisasi jBatik kemudian membuka peluang baru untuk mengidentifikasi karakter fractal dan mengklasifikasikan motif batik berdasarkan kerumitan pola dan daerah asalnya. Program ini juga memungkinkan jBatik menciptakan self-affine saat kelak menciptakan motif-motif baru memakai teknologi. Di antara dua bidang tersebut –yaitu budaya dan sains— Batik Fractal ada di tengah untuk menghubungkan dan menciptakan hal-hal baru.
