Before the Lapindo mud incident occurred in 2006, Sidoarjo was known as one of the craft center cities in East Java. The characteristic of the firm batik motif with brown dominated color has become their main characteristic. This brown color, unfortunately, later became the dominant color in Sidoarjo city sight of after the Lapindo mudflow devastated hundreds of houses in Porong Sidoarjo. This incident changed many things in Sidoarjo, but the batik crafters survived.
In 2014, Batik Fractal became acquainted with the community of batik artisans in Sidoarjo. Some use manual painting techniques, some use a stamp. However, Sidoarjo batik artisans are accustomed to making contemporary motifs. Therefore, when introduced to jBatik software, they were very enthusiastic.
One of the things we remember the most is Lutfi, a craftsman from Bintang Lima Company who created the “Sumber Lapindo” motif. This batik motif was inspired by the incident that damaged the city. With the characteristics of the Sekardangan batik, he made a new pattern shape to symbolize mud wells that drowned his neighbors. Batik “Sumber Lapindo” then can not only be seen as textiles, it has resembled a statement to never give up and not afraid to die by residents affected by this disaster.
Sebelum bencana lumpur Lapindo terjadi pada 2006, Sidoarjo dikenal sebagai salah satu kota pusat kerajinan di Jawa Timur. Karakteristik motif batiknya yang tegas dengan warna yang didominasi kecoklatan telah jadi ciri khas utama mereka. Warna coklat ini, sayangnya kemudian juga jadi warna dominan dalam pemandangan kota Sidoarjo setelah luapan lumpur Lapindo memporakporandakan ratusan rumah warga di Porong Sidoarjo. Bencana ini mengubah banyak hal di Sidoarjo, tapi para perajin batik bertahan.
Pada 2014 lalu, Batik Fractal berkenalan dengan komunitas perajin batik di Sidoarjo. Beberapa menggunakan teknik lukis manual, beberapa menggunakan cap. Namun perajin batik Sidoarjo telah terbiasa membuat motif kontemporer. Maka dari itu, ketika dikenalkan dengan software jBatik, mereka sangat antusias.
Salah satu yang paling kami ingat adalah Luthfi, perajin dari Bintang Lima Company yang menciptakan motif “Sumber Lapindo”. Motif batiknya ini terinspirasi dari bencana yang merusak kotanya. Dengan karakteristik dari batik Sekardangan, ia membuat bentuk pola baru untuk menyimbolkan sumur-sumur lumpur yang menenggelamkan tetangga-tetangga. Batik “Sumber Lapindo” kemudian tak bisa hanya dilihat sebagai tekstil, ia sudah menyerupai pernyataan untuk pantang menyerah dan tak takut mati oleh warga terdampak kecelakaan ini.
